The aim of the course is to give the participants understanding of the basic principles laboratory animal science. The course is obligatory for persons, who wish to participate in research using laboratory animals. The course is a function A/D course according to the EU Directive 2010/63 /EU Article 23.2 (previously designated category B by the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations). The course gives an introduction to practical and theoretical handling, housing and using laboratory animals and how to replace, refine and reduce the use of live animals for research (3R).

25-2-2019 C116A/15 Advanced course in Laboratory Animal Science – Focus on the Porcine Model.

To give the participants insight in how to conduct valuable and high-quality research projects with the pig as research model. There will be lectures on legislation and how to apply for permission to perform animal experiments. A paramount focus will be on anesthesia and analgesia of the pig, in order for the participants to be able to draft and perform a suitable anesthesia and analgesia protocol, and make thorough decisions on every aspect from pre-anesthetic agent to the postoperative pain relieve management and surveillance. This will be followed by some days of practical exercises. Here, the participants will have hands-on experience anesthetizing pigs and performing general surgical procedures. Participants will be taught in the concept of ARRIVE-guidelines, the 3 Rs, systematic review procedures as well as pitfalls when evaluating research results in swine and possible confounders to research results to consider. The aim here is to focus on the translational value. There will also be a brief touch upon precautions to avoid zoonoses.

The aim is to get an insight into entrepreneurship and business methods will help you:

  • Think about the value of your work in a society oriented way
  • Strengthen your communication skills

The rationale for this course is that researchers need to be better at identifying the value and applicability of their research and they need to be better at working in interdisciplinary teams and attract research funding under the new regimes of the EU, NSF and Innovation Fund Denmark.

The purpose is to provide an eye-opener for the value of using methodologies that originated from the start-up environment as a way to leverage results and provide value for stakeholders. The course will increase the PhD students’ ability to identify and increase the societal value of their research and thereby increase to possibility of raising more founding.

In your future workplace you will need the skills taught here to be able achieve funding, attract collaborators, and carry out interdisciplinary projects in a successful manner to achieve the changes you deem necessary.

27-2-2019 C32/46 Quantitative Medical Graphics

Give participants means to evaluate quantitative graphs and provide them with knowledge about which graphs to choose for their own data and a software toolbox to create publish-ready graphs for international journals.

The theoretical foundation for creation and display of quantitative graphs (graphical coding) is described. The structures of graphs are covered with a description of factors and elements of importance for effective reading of graphs (decoding). Advantages and disadvantages of various types of graphs are discussed by comparing various graphing methods applied to data sets. The course uses the SigmaPlot graphical software by which the participants will learn to produce clear graphs. NOTE: the software runs on PC only! In addition, exchange of data between Windows based programmes and SigmaPlot will be covered in theory and practise.
